Geologist Stephen L. Göczel journeyed from Goongarrie to Lake Carey to Cue in 1894, examining the country for mineral possibilities.
Today, Göczel Track can be followed, while not entirely contiguously, still reasonably close to the historical route. With the Lake Darlot leg the Track is 1100 kilometres in length. Resupply is available at Menzies, Kookynie, Laverton (small detour), Sandstone and Cue.

Göczel was one of the pioneers of Kanowna. He was a mining engineer and metallurgist and in 1894 he served as the Assistant Government Geologist of Western Australia.
